The judges said that if you were to close your eyes and listening to us, you would not know we messed up. We never stopped playing and we recovered so fast, we were so matured when this happened. I began teaching myself for the following three years, along with learning from my sister how to properly play the beautiful instrument. The music pushed me out of my comfort zone: concerts that forced me onstage, tests that made me play difficult songs, and teachers that pushed me to be an exceptional player. From the shy elementary school student I used to be to the outgoing band member I take joy in being today, music has shaped my everyday life. My music has helped me develop my life, by letting me learn a different language. Learning music started with my sister. She started out on flute. I swore up and down that I would never be in band. Music has helped me with stress. Band and the people in it have formed me into who I am today. Most music genres are soothing. I plan on being in marching.
Throughout my life, I have been taken by music. However, it was not until my 8th grade year in middle school that I realized that I could be a musician for the rest of my life. Before that, music just seemed like something to keep me out of trouble. How could something like that ever support someone? Still, it was the only talent that I could find any success in, and it was still very enjoyable, so I wanted to still give it a shot. In the beginning of the second semester in 8th grade, I decided to play the trombone in the jazz band, in addition to playing bass clarinet in the concert band. At one of our band festival competitions with the Association of Christian Schools International, our jazz band won first place and we performed once again at the closing ceremony for the all the schools that attended the festival to hear.
But, I decided to stop playing the trombone following that second semester and focus on the bass clarinet. Still to this day, I am one of the two bass clarinet players in my band and I am continuing to enjoy doing it. Playing music has taught me that having a strong work ethic can help you accomplish anything. In addition to that, music has given me a newfound appreciation of many genres of music and to truly admire the work of many. For a year, I danced to polka music every night. I was a preschool student at the time, and after a long day of coloring and napping, I would cut loose on the dance floor that was my living room. It felt as though every facet of my life as a toddler was brought together in these moments, and the music perfectly represented this phase of my childhood.
I have since realized how powerful an effect music has on me, and how the music that I love always seems to define the stage in my life which it occupies. But my mother never let me quit. I hated her for it but I realize now that she was doing something good for me. My mother made me play the flute. I never liked to practice the flute, but eventually I had to. These factors, hating being in band, my mother forcing me to stick with it, and playing the flute, changed my life. They had warned me it would be lots of after school rehearsals, clinics I would have to attend, and concerts I would have to attend as well.
I told myself I could definitely do it. So I accepted the invitation and joined the top group. From being in the symphonic band my 7th and 8th grade year, I knew I had matured as a player tenfold. Then, high school came around. I told myself all the time that I would be the best one there as a freshman. Oh boy, was I wrong. When I went for freshman band camp in , I had no idea what I had gotten myself into. Learning to march in time with the band and having to memorize the music all at once, I told myself I was fool coming here. But the passion I had for music kept me going.
So I suffered through band camp for 4 weeks in a row. Memorizing the music, marching and playing at the same time definitely made me mature as a. People say that music has the ability to heal a person mentally and spiritually. But to me, music is much more than just healing. It is a way for me to escape this world called reality and enter a world with in my imagination through the different beats, harmony, and chorus.
